eventLongDescription: The Elements collective will present its fifth screening event entitled Invasions Saturday 2 October 2004 at the Gladstone Hotel. Invasions is a two part screening event that brings together artists from both Northern and Southern Ontario. An accompanying programme catalogue will feature an essay by writer and curator Jessica Wyman. Artists included in this project: Mercedes Cueto, Gunilla Josephson, Annette Mangaard, Pamila Matharu, Darlene Naponse and Cheryl Rondeau. The artists and writer will be present for the event.
All exhibiting artists have produced new work for INVASIONS each bringing a unique perspective to the theme of identity and place. Dealing with issues such as mortality, spirituality, folly and the mundane this program of video and film promises to both entice and challenge. The first installment of this event took place at Whitefishlake First Nations, 7 August 2004.
The Invasions program explore concepts of location and dislocation as they relate to the development of the self. Each artist examines the significant role of 'place' in the process of filtering information. Using the dichotomy of North and South or urban and rural in the province of Ontario as field study, the project rationalizes this divide while also illuminating the inaccuracies of many longstanding assumptions. Rooted clearly in an attempt to develop commonality. The hybrid desire of this initiative is to interweave geographies by punctuating one social construct with another and constantly shift the dynamic of a centre/periphery relationship.
