Afiara String Quartet with David Hetherington, cello
Presented by Mooredale Concerts, Anton Kuerti, Artistic Director
“The Afiara completely changed my pulse, breathing, and inner rhythms; when I went to speak, I choked up,” wrote the American Record Guide, and Montreal’s La Presse chimed in to call them “A revelation...their musicality and maturity...placed the Afiara amongst the best of current quartets.” The program will present one of the most divine works in the chamber music repertoire, Franz Schubert’s so-called “Two Cello Quintet”. Written in the extraordinary last year of his life, it reveals an overwhelming range of emotions, from the ethereal despair of the slow movement to the swinging exuberance of the scherzo.
Also on the program are Dvorak’s String Quartet No. 13 in G, and the world premiere of Rhapsody for String Quartet by Larysa Kuzmenko, commissioned by Mooredale Concerts.
