JOE LASKER, ‘THE LAST REALIST,’ AT TORONTO’S LISS GALLERY, NOVEMBER 5TH –19TH 2011
The exhibit will showcase cityscapes, landscapes, portraits, fantasies, interiors, sea-scapes and still lifes.
As a young artist disenchanted by abstract expressionism, he was invited to join in the group of 48 outstanding realists—including Edward Hopper, John Sloan and Raphael Soyer—who made up the editorial board of Reality, the mid-Fifties, New York-based polemical journal that argued against non-representational art. Today, he is “the last Realist,” the last man standing, the only living member of that Reality group of 48.
