ARTIST’S STATEMENT As a child I was always absorbed in colour and observation of people and their interactions with each other. I stared with curiosity when visiting the city, the markets, and beaches. I remember looking at photos, magazines, cartoons, and logos, repeatedly. I have always sketched simple flowers and people and enjoyed creating elaborate sketches on any surface. However it was only in later years that my artistic ability was explored as a result of a traumatic loss of a relationship. I plunged into oil painting and ceramics to help me forget. It was then I realized that I was missing this undeveloped talent in my life. I am now absorbed completely in recreating images from childhood and re-discovering my Caribbean roots. I enjoy using bright colours in my paintings to evoke feelings of happiness and abundance. If a painting can make someone smile or remember a wonderful event, I feel fulfilled. I am inspired from photographs, magazines, and home videos. My favourite holiday in Trinidad and Tobago is Carnival. The artistic talent involved in planning such a massive event of street theatre, music, and dance inspires me to paint many images of characters enjoying some aspect of Carnival. I thrive on painting portraits of people and pets in oils, and capturing emotions, especially the innocent faces of joy of laughter.
