Formed in 1978, Necessary Angel Theatre Company is dedicated to creating theatre that advocates the richness of human experience, challenges assumptions, provokes and astonishes. With a line of poetry from Wallace Stevens as its inspiration – “For I am the Necessary Angel of the earth. For in my eyes you see the world anew"– the company has been an influential and original presence on the national and international theatre scene for 27 years, with 50 productions, including 23 world premieres and 8 North American premieres. The company's plays have been nominated for and have won numerous Governor-General's Awards for Drama, Chalmers Awards for Outstanding New Play and countless Dora Mavor Moore Awards. In 2003, Daniel Brooks succeeded founding Artistic Director of Necessary Angel, Richard Rose, once again confirming the company's commitment to the development of original Canadian theatre. A director, writer, actor and teacher, Brooks is a prolific and versatile artist whose innovation and risk-taking have made him a leader within the Canadian cultural landscape. Brooks has been recognized with accolades and awards throughout Canada and around the world.
